about gulls of brighton

Rachel Silverlight is the flippant-but-nice gin drinking, city-by-the-sea dwelling, knock-kneed lover of gulls and men what writes this blog.

I am an editor at Ilex Press, publisher of non-fiction illustrated guides to photography, filmmaking, art, pop culture, and the occasional puzzle book. In contrast, the core interests of this blog are poetry, literature, philosophy, and (now) politics.

I fairly accidentally ended up studying Philosophy at Cardiff University, which eventually led me to an MA at the University of Sussex in Brighton in Philosophy & Literature. There I added psychoanalysis, deconstruction, and utopian theory to my menagerie of mindfucks (Nietzsche, Heidegger, and eastern philosophy at Cardiff, alongside a thorough drenching in the rowdy nights of the Cardiff art and music scene were the first occupants of my unconventional brain zoo that turned my Christian/Platonic inheritance to ashes), and came to live by the sea where I have sworn to live ever since.

I’m interested in exploring the limits of thought and hope in turn to be able to translate these mental adventures into essays, stories, and poems. My philosophy is one of openness and criticism, responsibility and enjoyment.
